Skipping class

I have one student who hates going to pull out. I have caught him skipping my class twice already and each time i put him in ISS for 3 days. He has been caught skipping pull out 6 times now and he still continues to do it. I noticed he wasn't in my class today so i waited about twenty minutes and went looking for him. It wasn't hard to find him, he was in the same spot he has been caught every time. He goes into the boys bathroom and sits on the floor in the corner for an hour until it is time to go back to his homeroom. You would think he would learn his lesson or at least find a new hidding place. Now he will start his week back from the break in ISS again for 3 days.

Babe

This book is about a young boy named Joe Stochack. Joe discovers he has a special talent. When he holds an old baseball card, he is able to travel back in time and is able to interact with the player who is on the card. When Joe wants to return, he just holds a card from present day.

Young Joe travels back in time in order to see if Babe Ruth really did call his shot in the 1932 World Series agains the Chicago Cubs.

Joe's dad has money problems, and Joe thinks that he will be able to catch the ball Babe Ruth hit and then sell it when he returns home. Joe and his dad end up running into Babe Ruth and get to hang out with him and ride on a train with Babe Ruth and the team.

This book could also be used for history because it gives a description of what life was like during the Great Depression.

Did Babe Ruth call the shot? Does Joe's dad catch the home run ball?

Jackie and Me

In this book, young Joe Stoshack travels back in time to 1947. Unlike most of Gutman's books, this has a lot of truth to it. Although this book is a work of fiction, many of the details in the book are historically accurate.

Young Joe had to write a report on an African American who had an impact on today's society. Joe decided to use his talent and travel back in time and see what life was like in 1947 when Jackie Robinson was beginning his Major League baseball career as the first black man to ever play the game of baseball.

This book portrays life in the 1940's during segregation when Jackie Robinson was named the man who broke the color barrier. Some say he was the greatest baseball player of all time. Just one year after Jackie began playing in the Major Leagues, President Truman decided to desegregate the Armed Forces and this set everything else into motion.

Jackie Robinson impacted the life of Martin Luther King Junior, who was only eighteen years old when desegregation began. Martin Luther King Junior grew up watching Robinson break the color barrier and some say that this was the inspiration that sparked King's Civil Rights movement.

In this particular book, Joe is involved with Shoeless Joe Jackson. Many people have heard of the 1920 scandal. The quesion is, "Was Shoeless Joe involved or not?" The purpose for Joe Stoshack's trip is to find out the truth and try and see if he can stop it from happening.

During the 1920 World Series, the White Sox were paid off to lose the World Series. The players were tried by a grand jury and convicted. They were never to be involved in Major League baseball again. This meant coaching or managing as well. Many argue that Shoeless Joe was never involved in the scandal and should have his name cleared.

In the 1920 World Series, Shoeless Joe had twelve hits which was a World Series record. He had a batting average of 375 and he made zero errors throughout the series. Shoeless Joe also hit the only homerun of the series.

This doesn't sound like someone who was trying to lose the World Series. Was Shoeless Joe involved in the 1920 scandal?

This book could be used in a history class because it also talks about the 1918 Influenza epidemic that killed one hundred million people. Can young Joe Stoshack change history and prevent the 1920 White Sox from throwing the World Series?
